First Visit: What to expect

Sometimes going somewhere new can feel daunting, and scary. Here are some pictures of our venue, so you can take a look around and get familiar with how things look before your first visit.

The pictures run in order showing you what you'll see as you approach our building from the car park on Page Road.

Our front door is automatic, and you open it by touching the metal square on the right hand side or you can just pull the handle.

Then you walk through a short corridor until you get to the Green Room.

The Green Room is our main youth space, it has lots of sofa's, a pool table, some games consoles, and a small kitchen corner that sells snacks and refreshments.

This is also where we have little activities on offer, crafty bits, or cooking depending on the day and what's planned. During busy times this space can be quite loud, there's usually people talking and some hustle and bustle.

Also to the left in the Green Room, are the toilets. There are 3 and each can be used by anyone of any gender. The Third toilet is more spacious and has handrails for anyone less physically able. There's also a pullcord alarm if you get into difficulties.

Going passed the Green Room is our skatepark. We have lots of safety gear and equipment to borrow and coaches on hand to help with advice. Everyone using the skatepark knows how difficult it is, especially when you first start, so they're always supportive and friendly.

The space can be quite loud. There's music playing, people talking, and the sounds of skateboards hitting the ramps. Some of the young people that attend that are sensitive to loud noises like to wear headphones or ear defenders.

Quiet times:

At the moment our quietest session that's open to all young people is Sunday 4:00pm - 6:00pm. However all our sessions get very busy in the Winter months. For the most up to date information please contact us or call ahead.

We also run a Girls Only session on a Monday from 4:30pm which currently has less than 10 young people attend. This session is perfect for beginners, and girls that have maybe seen skating but struggled to 'get a go' at other skateparks. Usually once the basics have been mastered, our open sessions become more comfortable and easier to attend.

SEN, Physical disability & Additional needs:

We work with young people as individuals:

Some young people introduce themselves as having additional needs, some don't, some disabilities are more visible than others, some aren't; however you present, staff at the youth centre will welcome you and we are here to help you get the most out of your time at YOUF Cafe or Boarding School.

We regularly review our sessions and cohorts of young people attending to try and tailor our sessions to best suit your needs.

This could include having extra resources available, fidget and calming activities, lowering lights levels etc. If you have a suggestion for us adapting sessions to meet your needs better, just let us know!

The Skateboarding and youth communities, like any other sadly, isn't perfect and there's still a lot of growth that needs to happen. The YOUF Cafe and Boarding School aims to be a safe space for all young people, where we aim to develop understanding and acceptance whilst challenging discrimination in all it's forms
